What Are Freshies?

Car freshies are scented shapes made from aroma beads poured into silicone molds — and they've taken the craft world by storm. Whether you're making them for yourself, gifting them, or selling them, the process is surprisingly simple once you have the right molds and a few key supplies.

In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to make freshies from start to finish using our silicone molds.

Getting Started

Making your own car freshies may seem intimidating at first, but the basic process is actually pretty simple! Once you learn how your oven bakes and what properly fused aroma beads look like, you can begin experimenting with different molds, fragrances, colors, and decorations.

A freshie is a scented air freshener made by baking fragrance-filled aroma beads inside a mold until the beads fuse together and form one solid shape.

This beginner’s guide will walk you through the basic process we use to make freshies with silicone molds, pre-scented aroma beads, and an electric oven.

Before You Begin

These instructions are intended to give beginners a helpful starting point. Every oven, fragrance, bead mixture, and silicone mold can bake a little differently.

Your final baking time may be affected by:

• The type of oven you use
• How accurately your oven maintains its temperature
• The thickness and depth of the silicone mold
• The amount of fragrance oil in the beads
• The particular fragrance oil used
• The amount of mica or pigment added
• The brand or type of aroma beads
• The number of molds being baked at once

It is important to watch your first few freshies closely and learn how properly baked beads look in your particular oven.

Supplies You Will Need

For a basic silicone-mold freshie, gather the following supplies:

• A freshie-safe silicone mold
• Fully absorbed, pre-scented aroma beads
• Mica powder or freshie-safe pigment, if your beads are not already colored
• A spoon, scoop, or small measuring cup
• A sturdy baking sheet
• An electric oven
• Oven mitts
• Optional acrylic paint and small paintbrushes
• Glitter, if desired
• A nail, small drill, freshie hole punch, or eye hook
• Pliers
• A small lighter or torch, if using an eye hook
• String, elastic cord, ribbon, or fringe
• A freshie-safe storage bag

This guide assumes that your aroma beads have already been scented and are completely absorbed. We will cover how to scent unscented aroma beads in a separate guide.

Step 1: Make Sure Your Beads Are Ready

Before baking, your aroma beads should be fully absorbed and should not feel wet or oily.

Beads that still have fragrance oil sitting on their surface may not bake evenly. Allow the beads additional time to absorb the fragrance before using them.

When using pre-scented Whimsical Wiffs aroma beads, this part of the process has already been completed for you.

Step 2: Preheat Your Electric Oven

Preheat your electric oven to 325°F.

Allow the oven to finish preheating before placing your freshie inside. Starting with a properly preheated oven helps the beads bake more consistently.

These instructions are based on the method we personally use with an electric oven. Convection ovens, toaster ovens, and other types of ovens may bake differently.

An oven thermometer can also be helpful because the displayed temperature is not always the same as the actual temperature inside the oven.

Step 3: Prepare the Silicone Mold

Place your clean, dry silicone mold on a sturdy baking sheet.

The baking sheet keeps the mold level and makes the flexible silicone mold much easier and safer to move in and out of the oven.

Make sure there is no dust, lint, old mica, or other debris inside the mold. Small pieces of debris can become permanently baked into the front of your freshie.

Step 4: Fill the Mold with Aroma Beads

Carefully pour or spoon the scented aroma beads into the silicone mold.

Use your fingers or a small utensil to gently move the beads into narrow spaces, corners, letters, and detailed areas. Lightly tap or shake the baking sheet to help the beads settle naturally into the design.

Continue adding beads until the mold is filled evenly and the top is generally level. Avoid leaving thin or empty areas because those spots may not fuse properly and can make the finished freshie fragile.

Do not aggressively crush or pack the beads. You simply want them to settle evenly throughout the mold.

A Note About Mica: A little mica goes a long way! Using too much mica can heavily coat the aroma beads and may affect how well they fuse together. Heavy amounts of mica can also make small details and narrow areas more difficult to bake cleanly. Start with a small amount, mix thoroughly, and add more only when necessary.

Step 5: Bake the Freshie

Carefully place the baking sheet and filled silicone mold into your preheated electric oven.

Bake at 325°F for approximately 21–25 minutes.

Begin checking the freshie at the 21-minute mark. After that, check it every one to two minutes until it is completely baked.

How Do You Know When a Freshie Is Done?

The aroma beads should be fused together, but not melted smooth.

The freshie should hold together as one complete, solid piece. You should not see loose beads around the edges, in the center, or inside detailed areas. However, you should still be able to see the rounded shapes and texture of the individual aroma beads. The entire surface should not look completely flat or smooth.

A properly baked freshie may appear slightly glossy, but it should still have a recognizable bead-like texture.

The exact baking time can vary depending on your oven, the amount of fragrance oil in the beads, the fragrance used, the amount of mica added, and the thickness of the mold.

Step 6: Remove the Freshie from the Oven

Once the beads are fully fused, carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven using oven mitts.

Place the baking sheet on a heat-safe surface and allow the freshie to cool inside the silicone mold.

Do not immediately pull, bend, or stretch the freshie while it is extremely hot. It will still be soft and may bend, or lose some of its detail.

Allow it to cool until it feels firm and is safe to handle.

Step 7: Paint & Add Glitter

Once your freshie is fully cooled and removed from the mold, it’s time to make it your own. Use acrylic paint and a fine brush to add details, color blocking, or designs to the surface. While the paint is still tacky, sprinkle on glitter for extra sparkle — shake off any excess and let it dry fully before moving on. This is where your creativity really shines!

Tip: A light coat of mod podge or clear sealant over your decorated freshie helps lock in glitter and paint.

Step 8: Add Your Hook & String

Once your freshie is fully decorated and dry, use a hole punch, nail, small drill, or heated eye hook to create a hanging hole at the top. Thread your string, elastic cord, ribbon, or fringe through and secure with a knot or loop. Now it’s ready to hang in your car, closet, or anywhere you want a burst of fragrance.
